Laundry is one of those things that never goes away. As household chores go, it’s kind of a bummer. Since we wear clothes every day, we know the laundry will never be DONE; it just has to be managed. But while you’re digging out from under that immense pile of clothes to wash, make sure you’re not making mistakes that will end up harming your clothes. Laundry hacks are helpful, but make sure you avoid this one big mistake next time you’re heading for the laundry room.
The #1 Laundry Mistake You’re Making
If you try really hard to stay on top of the laundry, you might have several piles or loads ready to go in the washing machine at any one time. Great! But then the unthinkable happens: you spill wine or spaghetti sauce on your favorite pair of pants, and you know they need to go into the wash as soon as humanly possible. You throw it right into the wash, and maybe even include one of those piles that needs to be washed anyway. You’re saving time AND your favorite pants, right?
Wrong.
Here’s why: you never want to put any stained article into your washing machine without pre-treating it first. The laundering process, and especially the drying process, can actually make that stain harder to remove. You’re much better off to pre-treat the stain with your favorite laundry stain remover or other treatment method. Your goal lis to get as much of it out as possible BEFORE you ever wash the item — whether by itself or with a normal load. After washing, thereby setting the stain, you’ll have to resort to more drastic stain removal methods which can shorten the life of those amazing pants.
Just. Don’t. Do it. Your patience in pre-treating the stain before laundering will definitely pay off.
