How is your car’s upholstery looking lately? If you’ve got fabric upholstery, you know it’s pretty prone to getting stained, water marked, and just downright dirty. If you have kids or babies in car seats, it might be happening especially fast. If you want to get your car’s seats looking like new, you might be tempted to let the professionals handle it. But if you have a few simple ingredients at home, you can actually clean your auto upholstery very effectively — all by yourself.

1. What You’ll Need

You might have most or all of these ingredients at home already. The only ingredients you need are some club soda, vinegar, and blue Dawn dish detergent. Aside from that, you’ll need a spray bottle, scrub brush, and a shop vac. Before you begin cleaning, it’s always a good idea to vacuum those seats!

2. Get to Work

Combine 1 cup each of the club soda, vinegar, and blue Dawn. Mix it up and pour the mixture into a spray bottle and go to town on your seats. Spray liberally over any stained areas, and let it soak in for 10 minutes or so. At that point, grab your scrubbing brush and work in a circular motion over the stains. You’ll see the grime start to life away. Once you’re satisfied you have scrubbed enough, grab your shop vac and draw out as much of the moisture as you can. When the area dries, it’ll be easier to see any remaining stains that you can treat again in the same way.

Even old stains should come out with this method — at least most of the way. Just remember to vacuum the moisture out and / or leave your windows open to get plenty of air circulation when you’re done.
