And by the way, you shouldn’t really be cleaning your ears with cotton swabs anyway. You could actually damage your eardrum because it’s way too easy to stick them in too far! Just a word to the wise. 😉 But now that you know what you shouldn’t be using Q-tips for, we’re going to tell you how you should be using them. I mean, if you have a baby you know you need cotton swabs in the diaper bag, but these little beauties are super handy for all kinds of things.
1. Clean Your Glasses
Sure, they gave you a cleaning cloth and maybe even some spray when you got your new pair, right? But with a cheap little cotton swab, you can clean out all those little nooks and crannies that collect dirt, dust, and eww….dead skin. Clean the nose pads, around those tiny screws, and in the crevice between the lenses and frame. Just make sure you use the right type cleaner made for eyeglasses.
2. De-Wax Your Ear…Buds
If you have earphones…and who doesn’t…they easily become covered in ear wax. Don’t worry now…we all have it. It’s actually good for your ears in normal amounts, but when it gets packed into your earphones, it’s not so good for your music. Grab a cotton swab and clean out each one, and you might just be surprised how much wax and dirt emerges. Using a little mineral oil can help loosen the grime.
3. Clean Your Car Vents
The vents in your car can get really dusty, really fast. Most of us would rather not breathe in the dust that tends to settle in those vents. So about once a month, clean your vents with a cotton swab and a little bit of your favorite cleaner. Take a whole bunch out to the car with you — they’ll get dirty fast!
4. Dust Your Keyboard
Yep, all those crevices get pretty dirty. Take just a second to pick up your keyboard and hold it upside down over your desk. Now give it a good tap. You may be shocked at what falls out. In the absence of canned air, use a cotton swab to clean all around the ridges of your keys.
5. Enhance Your Eyelashes
This is a great beauty trick few know about…other than makeup artists. Know how they get eyelashes looking so full and fabulous for commercials and photo shoots? First, apply your mascara as normal. Then dip a cotton swab into powder (like cornstarch or face powder) and dust it over your lashes. This will actually add thickness to each lash and make them look amazing. Put on a second coat of mascara and see the difference!
