Who loves cleaning the toilet? Come on…raise your hand. Nobody?
Yeah, cleaning the toilet is nobody’s favorite household chore, but it’s one of those things that just has to be done. And the longer you put it off, the tougher — and smellier — that chore will be. To help take some of the yuck factor out of cleaning the toilet, here are 8 tricks that will make the job easier and freshen your bathroom in a jiffy.
1. Don’t Ignore the Tank
If you’ve checked your toilet tank lately, you’ve probably noticed a lot of hard water deposits — and maybe a funky smell. To fix it, pour in 1 cup of vinegar and let it sit while you clean the rest of the bathroom. Then, flush a few times to rinse the vinegar away (don’t leave the vinegar sitting — it’ll erode any metal parts).
2. Toilet Stoner
No, not that kind of stoner. A pumice stone! This rough little gem can erase even the most persistent ring around your toilet bowl. Soak the stone in warm water first. You want the toilet bowl and the stone to both be wet, or you’re likely to get scratches. Gently scrub the ring and you’ll be amazed at the results.
3. It’s Not Just for Cuts
Hydrogen peroxide makes a fabulous disinfecting agent for your toilet. Pour in about 1/2 cup and let it sit for 30 minutes before scrubbing and flushing.
4. Pearly White
Pour about 1/4 cup of your favorite mouthwash into the toilet bowl and let it stand for half an hour. Then scrub and flush as normal. Your toilet will be clean and smell minty fresh!
5. Cola
Pour a can of cola into your toilet bowl and take a Netflix break. When you come back in 30-60 minutes, you can scrub your toilet and find it sparkling.
6. Plop & Fizz
Remember the commercials for Alka Seltzer? Well, plop in a couple of tablets and come back in a few minutes. Your toilet will be ready for its closeup (after scrubbing, of course).
7. Blow it Up
Not literally! But if you’ve ever felt like just blowing it all up, try these 3-ingredient toilet bombs instead. All you need to make them is backing soda, dish liquid, and citric acid (usually available in bulk or online).
8. Go Way Back
Borax has been a staple household cleaner for generations. Lucky for us, it’s still widely available and just as versatile as ever. Keep a box under your bathroom sink to clean your toilet. It’s not rocket science — just sprinkle and scrub and enjoy the sparkle.
