If you’re going to have containers in your freeze, then it’s best that they be clear. This makes it a lot easier to find the items you’re looking for without having to dig through all the bins.
Along the lines above, label everything in your fridge especially if it’s in a container or not in its original package.
One of the things you can include on the labels is the portion size. By doing this, you won’t have to stand in front of an open freezer door trying to figure out how much of something is in a certain container or packages.
I also like to write the date that I should use a certain food by on the label as well. This makes it easy to use all your food before it goes bad so you don’t waste food.
If you can, freeze your food in serving sizes. For example, freeze chicken in packages just right for your whole family; that way you don’t need to be opening bags, pulling items out, sealing bags again, etc. Just grab and go with this great idea.
For bags of food that you’ve already opened, a great way to store them is by using clips to attach them to the racks of your freezer shelves. They’ll hang, which helps save room, too!
Take magazine holders and use them to create freezer shelves. You can store them upright or stack them on top of each other, whatever works best for your freezer.
If you have a chest freezer, then store your meals in fabric bags that you can easily pull out. This not only helps keep things organized, but it also saves you time when you go to make dinner.
For ice cream, do your best to keep it out of the freezer door and away from the front of the freezer. The changing temperature (when the freezer opens), causes the ice cream to melt and freeze repeatedly, which can ruin the flavor and texture of the ice cream.
Keep an “eat me first” box for your freezer so you don’t let any food go to waste. Put it at the front of your freezer so you and the rest of your family know what should be eaten first. (You can also do this in the fridge!)
Avoid freezer burn by using the right bags and containers for different foods. What you’re freezing will change the best type of container, but the basic rule is that you want as little air in contact with the food as possible.
Freezers actually work more efficiently if you have it crammed full. The frozen food helps freeze the other food, which means the freezer doesn’t have to work as hard. If your freezer is pretty empty, you can fill jugs ¾ full with water and have those as place holders.
For things like chicken stock, drinks, and herbs and olive oil, freeze them in ice cube trays. This allows you to pop them right out and use them without wasting much time. Plus, if you freeze your favorite drink, then when you get ice, it won’t water it down!
If you love making smoothies or other like foods, then freeze all the ingredients in one bag that you can just grab and go. For example, freeze banana slices, yogurt, and berries all in one bag that you can grab and drop all right into the blender.
When cooking, make extra of everything that you can freeze and then freeze it. This cuts down on cooking time when you go to make that meal again, which is always nice. Things like pizza dough, cookie dough, etc., are all great for making extra and freezing.
