Most of us make some kind of New Year’s resolutions. Maybe we want to get in shape. Perhaps we have career milestones we’d like to achieve. Maybe we have a couple of financial goals. But when you’re making your resolutions for the next 12 months, don’t neglect your home. If you find things have become a little sloppy around the house, why not make some simple cleaning resolutions that will help keep things in order? Here are some ideas.
1. Weekly Bathroom Cleaning
Most people don’t love cleaning the bathroom, which leads many of us to let it slide until it absolutely must be done. But the more regularly you clean it, the faster and easier it will be. Pick a day of the week and make that the day you clean your bathroom, floors and all. It should take less than 30 minutes.
2. Regular Vacuuming
Especially if you have kids and pets, regular vacuuming is a must. Set a goal to run your vacuum every week. If you have a robotic vacuum, this becomes easier to do even more often. But keep in mind that most robotic vacuums won’t replace the cleaning power of a regular upright or canister vac.
3. Load Trashcans with Liners
The painful part of taking out the garbage (besides the smell) is having to dig out a new bag for the can every time. But what if you lined your garbage can with 4 or 5 bags at a time? This way, all you have to do is remove the full bag and voila — a new one is already in place.
4. Check the Fridge Before Taking Out the Trash
Before you remove the trash from the can, check the fridge for expired food you can dump. Do this every time you take out the trash, and you’ll never have to do a major mold clean-out of your refrigerator.
5. Wipe Surfaces Daily
When you’re doing your usual bathroom routine (morning or night), take an extra minute to grab an antibacterial wipe and go over the sink, counter, and faucet. It’s a quick task that will keep your bathroom clean. In fact, you should really do the same thing in your kitchen. Just take a minute after loading the dishwasher.
6. Make Your Bed Daily
I don’t know about you, but my bedroom tends to become a catch-all. Add the clutter to the fact that the bed is usually unmade, and you don’t exactly have a recipe for relaxation. Fortunately, the simple task of making your bed every day can make you feel a lot better about the state of your bedroom.
7. Fold Laundry Straight Out of the Dryer
If you tend to let the clean laundry sit around in baskets, you not only clutter your home but end up with wrinkled clothes. Instead, make a habit of folding each load as soon as the dryer is finished. Either stand right there and fold it, or cart it into the TV room. You’ll be done with the load by the time your favorite show is over. Now go put it away!
