Everyone likes the idea of killing bacteria and viruses that could make us and our families sick. But not everyone likes the idea of using harsh and potentially harmful chemicals to accomplish that task. Thankfully for us, Mother Nature has provided some very useful disinfectants that are all natural and free of those nasty chemicals. Here are 5 all natural cleaning tips for disinfecting your home the natural way.

1. Vodka

Most vodka is 80 proof, meaning that it’s 40% alcohol by volume. This is enough to make it a good disinfectant for mold and mildew. Vodka also makes a great degreaser and stain remover, and will add a nice shine to your chrome fixtures. If you can find 100 proof vodka, that will provide the best germ-killing power. Spray it on and let it sit for a few minutes to do its thing.

2. White Vinegar

With its acetic acid content, white vinegar is a great cleaner that will easily cut grease, stains, mildew, odors, and more. It will also decrease bacteria on surfaces, which means it’s a safer alternative to bleach. Though less effective at killing germs than commercially-made disinfectants, it’s a good choice for people who are concerned about safety.

3. Lemons

Lemons contain citric acid, which are great for alkaline-based stains such as soap scum. Lemon juice can also be useful for sanitizing non-porous surfaces like countertops, and it can shine up oxidized metal (such as old copper). It doesn’t kill germs as well as vinegar, but will reduce bacteria on hard surfaces.

4. Hydrogen Peroxide

You wouldn’t want to drink it, but hydrogen peroxide is great for a safe surface disinfectant. It’s been used as an antiseptic for nearly 100 years because it’s so great at eliminating bacteria. You can also use it for laundry stain removal on whites, and to kill mold.

5. Steam

Steam is a fantastic cleaner and 100% chemical free. When you heat steam to 200 degrees Fahrenheit or hotter, it can not only get rid of grime and grease, but will also sanitize surfaces — either hard or porous. It might take as long as 20 seconds to sanitize something, but it can kill germs, bacteria, dust mites, and pathogens, all naturally!
