4 Grout Cleaning Tips You’ve Never Heard Of
So let’s talk about grout for a minute. We all know it’s that vital substance that is applied between tiles. It has an important job to do, and that’s to help keep your tile floor, wall or backsplash secure and strong. But it would be nice if it also looked as pretty as the day it was installed, wouldn’t it? It seems to gunk up quickly. And it even gets so dirty that it’s no longer a color you like–even if you seal it. If any of this sounds familiar, I’m about to show you how to keep that grout clean and pretty with 4 easy grout cleaning tips.
Tip #1
Don’t waste your time {or risk your family’s health} by trying to bleach your grout. Bleach is hazardous, and breathing too much of it in can actually harm your lungs. If you absolutely have to use it to kill some mold, please dilute it with water! Never use it straight, and also make sure the room where you use it is well-ventilated. Mix a ratio of 4 parts water to 1 part bleach in a spray bottle. Spray it onto moldy areas, and then allow it to penetrate for a few minutes. Use a scrub brush to help loosen the mold if necessary. Rinse the area thoroughly with water.
Tip #2
You may not believe what I’m about to tell you, but trust me. Good old blue window cleaner is the best thing I have ever found to clean my grout! In fact, I use it on my bathroom tile regularly. Not only does it clean the grout, it also loosens and dissolves the build up from the over spray of hair products. So how does it work?
Tip #3
Grab a bottle of blue window cleaner, any brand, and spray it on the tile and grout to be cleaned. Walk away and set a timer for 10 minutes. When the timer goes off, use an old toothbrush to lightly scrub the grout and any other areas that are especially dirty.
Tip #4
Now all you need to do is use a clean rag or paper towels to wipe up the window cleaner and polish the grout and tiles dry. No water rinse is necessary!
Here’s an actual picture of the grout in one of my own bathrooms, midway through cleaning with window cleaner. The darker grout on the right side of the picture is before cleaning. The left side of the picture shows you how well window cleaner cleans grout. As you can see, the grout is lighter, because it’s been brought back to the silvery-gray that it’s supposed to be.
Use these 4 grout cleaning tips to clean up your grout quickly and easily!
