We all know that the kitchen sponge is one of the notorious household items that harbor bacteria, but you just might be surprised at some of the others! In the interest of helping our readers live healthier lives, we’re exposing some of the shocking household items that harbor bacteria–and these are items you probably don’t think about. The more you know about the places where bacteria like to hide, the better!
Household Items That Harbor Bacteria
Disposable Razors
This item surprises me–does it surprise you too? Your disposable razor should not be kept in the shower, because it never dries out. Stuff that doesn’t dry {like that kitchen sponge} are notorious for harboring bacteria because moisture provides a prime breeding spot. Experts recommend only using your disposable razor for about 6 shaves before you toss it and use a new one.
Toothbrush Holder
Pick up your toothbrush holder and take a whiff into the bottom. Whew! If it smells bad, you know it’s full of bacteria. The toothbrush holder is just one of those things we don’t think about cleaning when we clean the bathroom. If you do, good for you! Keep it up.
Bath & Hand Towels
Do your bath and hand towels get a chance to dry out between uses? If you’re hanging them too close together, there’s a good chance they don’t. Your nose will tell you if bacteria and mildew are present. Make sure to launder your bath towels in hot water at least a couple of times per week. You don’t want to dry your clean hands with a bacteria-laden towel!
Liquid Makeup
Are you surprised by this one? Bacteria love moisture, and that includes the moisture in your cosmetics. One way to prevent getting bacteria in your foundation is to be sure to wash your hands before every time you apply it. It’s a good idea to replace your liquid makeup twice a year, if it lasts that long.
Lip Balm
Yep, your Chapstick can harbor tons of bacteria. It touches your mouth all the time, and any bacteria or food particles there easily transfer to the tube. Give it a smell test each week, and watch for mildew inside the lid.
