Hey, you’ve got a busy life. You probably don’t have time to spend hours a day cleaning. That said, life happens, people make messes, and things get dirty. Sadly, we don’t all have housekeepers to make sure everything stays clean and neat. Since there are certainly some items in your home that get a little neglected, let’s talk about some things you might want to make a priority.

1. Ice Cube Trays

When was the last time you washed your ice cube trays or ice holders from your freezer? We don’t think about it much, but they can definitely absorb odors or pick up particles of food. When they’re empty, give them a good wash with hot water, or run them through the dishwasher if you think it’s safe.

2. Reusable Grocery Bags

These bags hold a lot and cut back on waste. What’s not to love about that? Well, germs for one thing. Think of what they carry week after week: fresh foods like meat, seafood, and dairy are probably on your shopping list, along with produce and other things. This makes them prone to bacteria buildup. Wash fabric bags in your machine, or buy the plastic kind you can wipe out with an antibacterial cleaner.

3. Handles and Handrails

Refrigerators. Kitchen drawers and cupboards. Doorknobs. Faucets. All these things get “handled” a lot, and probably with hands that have food, sweat, or at least a bunch of germs on them. At least weekly, it would be a good idea to use an antibacterial wipe or a 50/50 vinegar/water solution on these surfaces. And when someone gets sick, multiple times a day would be best.

4. Electronics & Switches

How many hours a day do you use your mouse and keyboard? How many lights do you turn on and off in a day. Now, multiply that by everyone else in the household or office. Yikes! Keep some antibacterial wipes in your desk for just this sort of thing, especially if you or someone else has a contagious illness. It’s also a good idea to do a more thorough cleaning periodically, for both germs and dirt that may affect their function.

5. Toothbrush Holders

When you put your toothbrush away, think about what might be on your hands. Spit, perhaps? Yeah, it’s not pretty. That runs down your toothbrush handle and right into your toothbrush holder. This is why you should really run it through the dishwasher about once a week if you can, or at least give it a hot, soapy rinse in the sink.
