Those little rodents might be deceptively cute, but we all know they don’t belong in our homes! As much as you like to be inside where it’s warm during the winter, so do the rodents. Today I have some clever tricks to keep them out during the winter. Some of these tricks you may already know, but some you might not. Check them out!
Keep mice out where they can’t do damage to your home. Mice have a strong sense of smell {cheese, anyone?} and peppermint is a smell they do not like. Soak a few cotton balls in peppermint essential oil, and leave them in corners and dark areas where mice like to hide.
If you live in area where critters like to hide out in chimneys and you have a fireplace, you need to install chimney caps. One of my neighbors once had an entire family of raccoons take refuge in her chimney, and then they all died inside it. It took some time to discover where the source of the resulting awful smell was coming from! If you install chimney caps, you won’t have to worry about this happening to you.
Seal up cracks in your home’s foundation. Cracks give rodents easy access, so seal them up and shut rodents out. As the weather gets colder, spraying foam insulation in these cracks is a clever trick to keep rodents out.
Vacuum frequently during the winter to pick up any crumbs that attract and feed rodents. After vacuuming, stash a few unused dryer sheets in corners and around the floor of closets where mice and other rodents like to hide. They don’t like the scent of the dryer sheets, and on the plus side, your clothes will smell fresher for longer!
Try these clever tricks to keep rodents out of your home this winter. No one wants to share their space or their food with mice!
