If you have a fireplace, that’s the perfect spot to cuddle up and get warm, but not everyone does. Follow these winterizing tips to keep the whole house more comfortable this winter:

  1. Don’t forget to change your furnace filter before you fire it up for the winter. And then be sure to change it at least every 3 months, or even sooner. A dirty filter costs you money and warmth, because your furnace has to work harder to get air through a dirty filter. Winterizing Tips | Winterizing Tips and Tricks | DIY Winterizing Tips | Keep your Home Warmer in the Winter | Warmer Home | Winter Homes | Winterizing Hacks
  2. It’s also an excellent idea to have a specialist check out your furnace before the cold hits. If the specialist can spot a problem while it’s minor, you will save time and money later on. If you don’t catch a problem while it’s minor, it can turn into a major problem that can cause you some cold days and nights! So have a tune-up done in September or October.Winterizing Tips | Winterizing Tips and Tricks | DIY Winterizing Tips | Keep your Home Warmer in the Winter | Warmer Home | Winter Homes | Winterizing Hacks
  3. You can stay warm enough and save money on your heating costs by layering up and setting your thermostat somewhere between 68 and 70 degrees during the day. At night, put flannel sheets on the bed, add a blanket or two, and turn the thermostat down to around 65 to save up to 10% on your heating costs. Winterizing Tips | Winterizing Tips and Tricks | DIY Winterizing Tips | Keep your Home Warmer in the Winter | Warmer Home | Winter Homes | Winterizing Hacks
  4. Take a walk around the house before the cold hits, and notice any drafty areas. These are typically around outside doors and windows. Install foam weather strip to help seal up drafts and keep you warmer all winter long.
  5. Set your ceiling fans to run clockwise. Warm air rises, but running the fans clockwise helps circulate that warm air through the room. It also helps cut your heating costs.
  6. Consider a plastic heat-shrink window insulation kit. It’s an easy install that helps seal warm in and cold air out–and the opposite during the summer months. It’s crystal clear, so you won’t sacrifice your views!

Try these winterizing tips to stay warmer {and a little richer} this winter!
