Front loading washers are attractive, energy efficient, and easy to get things in and out of. The only trouble with most of them is that they tend to get stinky if not cleaned regularly. Here’s how to keep your front loader squeaky cleaning stink-free! You don’t even need those expensive machine cleaners.
1. Drain
Before you clean, make sure you drain any lingering water from your machine. Most front loaders have a drain panel in the front that opens up, making this easy to do. Grab a small bucket or tray to catch the water. After you drain the water, there should be a filter there that you can pull out and clean. You might be surprised at how yucky it is in there if you haven’t cleaned it for a while! Do this every few weeks.

3. Wipe the Seal
Your front loader has a big rubber gasket around the door where water may collect, which causes mildew. Get a rag and a 50/50 vinegar/water solution to clean it out.
4. Leave the Door Open
You may have heard this, but keeping your washer fresher, longer may be as simple as leaving the door open a little between loads, so it can dry.
5. Run the Clean Cycle
About once a month, or as recommended by the manufacturer, run your clean washer cycle. Instead of buying the special washing machine cleaner, you can use vinegar. Pour 1/4 cup of baking soda in the drum if you wish. For bad smells, use bleach instead of vinegar.
