Regular cleaning is no fun, and spring cleaning can be even more monotonous! However, not all spring cleaning chores need to be tedious and time-consuming. Here are some easy tasks you can do for spring cleaning that will help break up the bigger projects.
Reseal and Clean Grout
Depending on how worn down and dirty your grout is you’ll have to do anything from a full-scale replacement to just a light clean. Examine your grout in each room, determine what level of care it needs, and then do it!
Vacuum Walls and Ceiling
Dust and cobwebs can easily settle on the walls and high corners of the ceiling where we can’t see or are just too lazy to reach. This spring, make sure to just quickly vacuum off the walls and ceiling for a nice clean!
Dust Light Fixtures
This can sometimes be really boring and take a lot of time, but make sure you at least get to it at spring cleaning. Take your time and really get in and around each light fixture. It may be monotonous, but you’ll definitely appreciate it!
Shampoo Rugs
While vacuuming your rugs may work just fine doing the rest of the year, try to shampoo them at least once (or twice) a year. This goes for your carpet as well, but rugs usually have higher traffic on them.
Wash Doors
Believe it or not, doors are actually an easily forgotten part of the house. Just give each one a quick inspection and clean off any grime, dirt, or dust you may see on them. If necessary, oil the hinges for a nice easy open.
Dust off Upholstery
Take any cushions or pillows that you have and take them out to the backyard for a nice cleaning. Gently beat them with a tennis racket or rug duster to get them fresh and clean!
Wax Wooden Floors
You may not need to do this every year (depending on the foot traffic in your home and your level of perfectionism), but it’s good to at least consider. You can do it yourself or just hire professionals if you want.
Clean/Replace Entry Mat
While you may love your little welcome mat with the doggy paw prints on it, consider replacing that old entry mat. Both the ones inside and outside should be replaced every year or so in order to be as effective as possible.
Smoke Detectors
Check your smoke detectors (it’s probably best to do this twice a year, actually). If they’re broken or the batteries are dead, make sure to take the correct steps as soon as possible to get them back up and working.
Air Covers and Vents
Make sure all the vents are cleared of any dust build up and that the covers look nice and shiny. You can take them all off and hose them down in the back or just wipe them down one by one, whatever works best.
Declutter
Whether it’s the drunk drawer, a messy cupboard, or an entire closet, do your best to declutter as much as possible in the spring. Get rid of any broken or old materials you haven’t used in a while and organize the rest.
Clean Drawers
Take everything out of the drawers and then wipe them down completely on the inside and outside. You’d be surprised at how much gunk can built up inside a closed drawer!
Donate
If you haven’t worn a piece of clothing for a while or you have things you don’t like or that don’t fit you anymore then consider donating them. You can be both productive and charitable at the same time!
Window Screens
Take off all the window screens and clean them off. There are lots of different methods of doing this, but wiping it down with a rag can usually do the drug. Apply a screen protector if you want.
Window Tracks
If you really want to clean your windows, you can take the entire pane out and clean the track underneath. Lots of dust, dirt, and even dead insects can collect underneath the windowpane.
Drapes and Blinds
Dust, spray down, and just clean all the blinds and drapes around the windows. Depending on the material they’re made from, you’ll want to take a certain approach, so make sure you do your research beforehand.
Move Bed
You should move your bed at least once in the year and clean underneath it. Throw away anything underneath it that you haven’t used in a while, and make sure to dust and vacuum.
Open Windows
This is a super easy spring clean trick! Just open up the windows in your home to get a fresh burst of air into your home! This can help clear your home of any musty smells and maybe even cool it down a bit.
Wax Tub
While cleaning your tub on a regular basis is good, a nice wax polish can also do wonders for it! You can choose from lots of different types to wax your tub with, so just choose one you like and that fits in your budget.
Toilet
Don’t just give your toilet the quick once over this spring. Unattach the lid to clean around any of the connector parts and maybe even clean inside the tank, making sure there’s no unhealthy buildup.
Sanitize Cutting Boards
You’ll actually probably want to do this more than once a year. Cleaning your cutting board is always good (especially after each use), but that doesn’t always get deep down in the pores of the wood. Sanitize it so it can stay as fresh and usable as possible.
Sharpen Knives
If you don’t want to send your knives off to some expensive place to get sharpened then just do it yourself. While it may not be as good as a professional service, rubbing the knife on the bottom part of a ceramic bowl or mug can usually do the trick.
Throw out Broken Utensils
Go through all your kitchen utensils and make sure they’re all in good condition and usable. No need in having a whisk with broken wires. Throw out all the broken ones and donate those that you don’t like any more.
Oven
Deep clean your oven (both inside and out) this spring cleaning season. You can put the oven on self-clean or follow an online guide to cleaning your oven. Choose whatever works best.
Stovetop
Don’t just wipe down the stovetop and call it good. Remove the burners, lift up the lid, and really clean the whole thing. You can even give it a nice polish if you want!
Fridge and Freezer
Remove all the food in your fridge and freezer and deep clean both of them! Once you’ve cleaned them out, throw away any of the food that’s gone bad, expired, or no one eats.
Refrigerator Coils
Vacuuming the refrigerator coils on the back of your fridge can both keep your home safe and extend the life of your fridge as well. It’s a pretty simple and easy clean, so you might as well do it!
Toaster
Cleaning the outside of the toaster is always a good thing, but you also need to make sure to really remove all of the crumbs and bits of food that are stuck deep down inside it. This will help your food taste better and not have that burnt smell wafting around your kitchen.
Underneath Fridge and Oven
While you’ve got all the cleaning materials out, make sure to really get underneath the oven, the fridge, and any other major appliance or part of your kitchen that may easily hide food and dirt.
Polish Table
If you have a wooden table (or any table that can be polished) take this time to do that now! You’ll be surprised at how much a polished table can improve the kitchen or dining room.
