Believe it or not, having a junk drawer isn’t actually a bad thing. Most of us have them (hopefully only one though) and it can come in handy sometimes. Some objects just don’t fit anywhere else or there aren’t enough of them to justify their own space. However, it’s easy for a junk drawer to go south pretty fast. Here are some great tips to help keep your junk drawer clean and organized.
Remove Drawer
First things first, remove the whole drawer out of its slot. This will force you to actually clean the drawer and not just shut it when you get bored. Pull the drawer out, put it on the table or counter and bring the garbage near, because that’s the next step.
Throw Away
Your first time through the junk drawer, just look for things that are broken and need to be thrown away. That may be an empty glue bottle, broken scissors, or any other useless objects. If you haven’t touched the item in a while and it’s almost empty, then just toss it.
Relocate
Now that you’ve thrown out all the broken and useless items, it’s time to figure out what doesn’t really belong in the junk drawer. This may be a comb that should be in the bathroom, a dog leash that should be hanging up by the door, or anything else. Junk drawers should only be for small items that don’t have enough of them to belong anywhere else.
Clean
Now that your pile of things for your junk drawer are objects that actually belong in the junk drawer, you should deep clean the drawer. Wash the insides and outside of it, taking special care to scrub away any gunk or grime. Change the paper if necessary and you can even paint it if you want.
Organize
Lastly, don’t just throw the items back in the junk drawer. Get little plastic bins or jewelry boxes to section off your junk drawer. Get a small bowl for pins and buttons, another for sets of keys, one for batteries, etc. This will help the drawer stay organized as you add and take more from it.
