If you have allergies, you know what it’s like to suffer at the hands of those tiny little dust mites. You might get congested. Maybe you sneeze a lot. Maybe you even get asthma attacks. No matter how they affect you, controlling dust is only part of the solution to controlling dust mites. Here are some tips to help you banish them naturally.
1. Wash More
How often you wash your sheets has an effect on your dust mite problem. If you have allergies (and even if you don’t), it’s best to wash your sheets weekly in hot water to get rid of the little buggers.
2. Freeze ‘Em
Remember that episode of Friends where Joey put his copy of The Shining in the freezer? If dust mites scare you, try putting your pillows in the freezer for a few hours on a monthly basis.
3. Use Protective Covers
To reduce dust mites and their effects, cover your pillows and your bed with protective covers. They’ll help keep things clean and reduce your allergy problems.
4. Stop Making Your Bed
No really!! Making your bed after you get up in the morning has a way of keeping moisture in, instead of letting it evaporate. When you pull the covers off and leave them off, any moisture has a chance to evaporate. Since dust mites love humidity, letting things dry out is a great idea. So there you go! There’s your excuse to be lazy.
5. Vacuum More
Vacuuming your room — and your bed — will help reduce dust mites, especially if you have a HEPA filter on your vacuum. You should also vacuum your air intake vents regularly.
6. DIY Spray
Dust mites can be repelled with certain scents. To make your own dust mite repellant spray, you’ll need rubbing alcohol, distilled water, some essential oils like eucalyptus, cinnamon, or lemon, and a spray bottle.
