Are you a clutter bug? One of those who thinks there is no way the getting rid of clutter is easy? Clutter is one of the top problems we encounter in managing our living spaces. Cleaning it up can be quite a chore–especially if it’s allowed to accumulate over time. Well, I’ve got good news for you today! There is an easy way to clean up all that clutter and make your home easier to live in. Stick around while I show you how.
Before you get started on your clutter removal, you will need 4 large containers to make the job go much easier. Label {either for real or in your mind} those containers as follows:
- Trash
- To Sell/Give Away
- Storage
- Put Away
Decide on which room of your home you’d like to start on. Have all 4 of your containers handy, but I like to concentrate on one thing at a time. For example, I like to make a quick scan of the room for stuff I know I’m going to send to the landfill, and collect all those things first. That makes it easier to then refocus on the things I want to sell, the things I want to keep in the house for daily use, and the things I want to store in a storage unit or in the attic.
Keep these things in mind while you declutter:
- Stuff that’s purely sentimental doesn’t equal the person it came from. Would a digital picture of the item have just as much sentimental meaning? Probably so!
- Hanging onto something “just in case” you might need it “someday” is just a recipe for allowing continued clutter in your life.
- Don’t keep old clothes in hopes that you’ll fit into them again. Instead, promise yourself some new clothes as a reward for hitting your goals!
Once you have gone through the room and decided on what stays, what goes, and what will be stored, follow through on those commitments. Take the trash to the landfill right away, donate or sell the saleable items, and find a place for the things you’re using regularly.
