Cleaning Tips Using Salt
If you have ever dealt with a shaker full of clumpy salt–the worst when you just want to salt your potatoes!–you know that salt readily absorbs moisture. It’s this moisture-absorbing quality that makes it a great alternative to cleaning around the house. Check out what you can do with it:
- Use salt to absorb spills on carpet. Sprinkle the salt liberally over the spill. Then wait a few minutes for the salt to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. Vacuum up the salt and blot up any remaining liquid with a soft cloth. Then clean as you normally would.
- Salt is a great substance for cleaning up your cast iron skillet! The salt acts as a scrubbing agent, but it won’t wreck the seasoning you’ve worked so hard to build. Use a sponge to work the salt over the surface of the pain, particularly over burnt-on food stains. Rinse well and apply a light coat of oil before storing your pan.
- Try a paste of salt and water on those annoying yellow pit stains on your white t-shirts. Let it sit until it dries out and then launder as usual.
- The next time your car leaks oil on your driveway or your garage floor, use salt to absorb the oil. After it sits for a while, you can easily sweep up the salt and the oil.
- What do you do when your silk flower arrangements get dusty? Sometimes the dust is hard to remove with a duster. Instead, pour enough salt to cover the bottom of a brown paper bag and add the silk flowers. Shake the bag, and the salt actually helps to loosen and remove the dust from the foliage. It’s really a genius trick, and so easy!
- Use salt to clean up your dirty dish sponge. After you clean up a gunky pan, your sponge can look pretty gross. So put two cups of water in a bowl, add 1/4 cup of salt, then stir to dissolve the salt. Drop in the dirty sponge and allow it to soak overnight. In the morning, you’ll be amazed at how clean your sponge is!
- Sprinkle salt on the cut half of a lemon, and use the two together to scrub away coffee stains from your favorite mugs. This trick also cleans up a nasty cutting board!
- My favorite of these cleaning tips using salt is to use a cut lemon sprinkled with salt to brighten up your copper and brass–pots, faucets, and other items. Your pots will gleam once again.
