As you have probably noticed, stainless steel has become the new standard for appliances. When you go shopping for a new refrigerator, stove, microwave or dishwasher, chances are you head straight for the stainless – which probably comprises about 75% of what you see in stores these days. Stainless is attractive and durable, making it a fantastic material for just about any appliance, not to mention cookware. The only issue is that cleaning stainless steel (especially those persistent little fingerprints) can be a pain. Here are several ways to make yours shine again.
1. WD-40
This magical substance that treats those squeaky hinges also works like magic on stainless steel.
2. Flour
No kidding! For obvious reasons, this is better used on your stainless steel sink rather than an appliance. After cleaning the sink with whatever cleaner you use, you can sprinkle the inside with flour and use a paper towel or soft rag to buff it to a shine. Wipe up any excess with a damp cloth.
3. Olive Oil
Before using olive oil, give your appliance a wipe down with vinegar to clean it. Then rub it down with a soft cloth with a little olive oil on it. When you’re done, use another cloth to buff. Enough of the oil should stay put to actually prevent fingerprints. Score!
4. DIY Natural Paste
Mix 1/4 cup vinegar, 1/2 cup baking soda, and 1 tablespoon each of lemon juice and olive oil. Make a paste and rub it all over your stainless. Let it sit about 10 minutes and then buff it away. Shiny!
5. Furniture Polish
Spray a generous coat of furniture polish, like Pledge, all over your stainless. Then just grab a soft rag and swirl it into the surface. Let it stay there for a few minutes, then buff it away.
6. Coconut Oil
Use just a tiny amount and a soft cloth to buff your stainless steel to a nice shine.
7. Baking Soda & Vinegar
For your stainless steel pans with burnt-on stains, scrubbing with baking soda and a little water will usually work well. For more stubborn issues, boil a mixture of about 80% water and 20% vinegar. Let it boil for a minute or two, then pour the solution into the sink. Add more baking soda to the hot pan, and use a good sponge (protect your hands) to scrub again.
8. Club Soda
Spray some club soda right onto your stainless and wipe in the direction of the grain. It’ll both clean and shine the surface.
9. Stainless Steel Cleaner
Sure, not everyone wants to go this route, but the cleaning products made specifically for stainless steel actually do a fabulous job. Just follow the directions on the bottle.
10. Water & Microfiber
If you haven’t got much on hand or just want to see what it can do, just grab a microfiber cloth and dampen it just a tiny bit with water and go to town on your stainless. Work in the direction of the grain and you might be surprised how well it works. Make sure to dry it well so you don’t get mineral spots.
