It seems like bars of soap are going the way of the dodo. Most of us prefer to use pump soaps near the sink, and body wash in the shower. But before you quit buying those soap-bar multipacks, consider all the different ways you can use those bars of soap in your home. Some of these handy uses might just surprise you!
1. Keep Critters Out of the Garden
If you have deer that tend to roam your neighborhood, you know they’ll eat your garden before you have a chance to get a harvest or enjoy your flowers. Rabbits and other fuzzy critters are no less damaging. But with a bar of Irish Spring soap, you can make a garden sachet that repels them. Cut the bar into cubes and wrap them in cloth. Staple those little soap packets onto stakes and place them around your garden.
2. Keep Nails Clean
When your gardening or doing yard work, your nails tend to get dirty (even if you wear gloves!). But not if you first run your nails over a bar of soap. You’ll keep the dirt out, and the soap easily rinses away.
3. DIY Body Wash
Body wash can be expensive, and bars of soap are cheap! Using a bar of soap, a cheese grater, and some water, you can make your own body wash at home.
4. Drawer Sachets
My grandma always kept a bar of soap in her drawers with her clothes, and she always smelled so good. Get your favorite kind of soap and keep it in a cloth bag in your drawers.
5. Make Sewing Easier
Got a mending job or a button to sew back on? Coat your needle or straight pins in bar soap (or use a bar as a pin cushion), and it’ll slide right through those tough fabrics.
6. Treat Bug Bites
Did you know you can soothe bug bites by rubbing them with bar soap? Just one more reason to keep it handy!
7. Move a Stuck Zipper
Got a zipper that tends to stick? Run some bar soap on it and it’ll slide smoothly again.
8. Clean Up Broken Glass
Next time you have broken glass to clean up, wet a bar of soap and use it to pick up those tiny shards. Then just throw the bar away. You an also unscrew a broken lightbulb this way.
9. De-Stink Your Shoes
Slide a bar of soap inside your shoes to absorb odors overnight. You’re welcome.
10. Exfoliate
Add exfoliating power to your bar of soap by wrapping it in felt. Make a great little gift, too.
11. Mark Sewing Fabrics
Sewing something? Instead of using a special fabric pencil, use a sliver of bar soap. It’ll wash right out.
12. Loosen a Ring
Can’t get that ring off? Rub some soap and a little water over your finger, and it should slide right off.
