Have you looked at your baseboards lately? Here’s a story for you. I was recently considering painting my living room. When I was looking at the walls I realized how awful my baseboards looked. And you know what? After I cleaned them up, the whole room looked so good that I decided I can wait at least another year before painting. Clean, fresh baseboards make a HUGE difference in the look of your room. Here’s how to get them clean quickly and easily — and keep them looking cleaner, longer; so you can avoid extra work (like painting).
1. The Supplies
You’ll only need a few basic supplies to give your baseboards a good once-over: a cleaning brush, broom and dustpan, spray bottle with water, sponge (Magic Erasers are even better), cotton swabs, and dryer sheets (that’s right!).
2. Brush ‘Em Up
Begin with your brush, and go over the edges to brush away any dust. If it’s been there a while it can be harder to remove — that’s why the brush comes in handy. Once you’ve loosened it up, use your broom and dust pan to get rid of it completely. You could also pull out your vacuum hose. Just get it all, because you don’t want to find it stuck to your newly-cleaned baseboards.
3. Spray & Wipe
Once the dust has been banished, you’re safe to lightly spritz your baseboards with water, one small stretch at a time. Then, grab your sponge or Magic Eraser and go to town removing scuffs, stains, and other grime. But what about the corners, you ask? This is where your cotton swabs come in. Those corner pieces are tough to tackle, but a cotton swab (or toothbrush) can get all those nooks and crannies clean.
4. An Ounce of Prevention
Now that your baseboards are squeaky clean, you want them to stay that way, don’t you? After they’re dry, take your dryer sheet and rub your baseboards down. This will give them a special coating that repels dust and pet hair. Genius!
