We hear a lot about decluttering our homes and garages, and both areas definitely need it. But what about breaking down your decluttering process into smaller bits? Specifically, I’m talking about your clothes. You can’t really enjoy a relaxing bedroom if there are clothes everywhere, and deciding what to wear is tricky enough without spending 20 minutes looking for your favorite jeans. Here are some helpful tips to help declutter your wardrobe.
1. Don’t Waste Space, Time, and Energy on Things You Don’t Love
Most of us have a slew of things in our closet and dresser drawers that we don’t wear. Maybe those blouses are out of style. Maybe those patterned leggings are totally unflattering. Whatever the reason, if you don’t really like it or aren’t going to wear it in the next year, donate it. Why waste precious storage space on things you don’t love?
Take every item out one at a time and look at it. Have you worn it recently? Is it comfortable? If you saw it in a store today, would you buy it? Does it fit you NOW? If it doesn’t make you feel awesome or you have nothing that goes with it, get rid of it. And remember: the same rules apply to accessories like purses, scarves, and hats.
2. Have Boxes or Bags Handy
Before decluttering your clothing, make sure you’re ready for the different piles you’ll be making: donate, keep, give to so-and-so, not worth fixing, and mend. You may have other categories, but as you decide what to do with each piece, put in in the appropriate bag and leave it. Don’t second guess your decision. Bagging things right away will keep your piles organized and (hopefully) keep you from going through everything a second time.
3. Take Everything Out — No Really!
You can’t really see how much space you have to keep things unless you empty your closet or drawers. Knowing how much clothing storage space is available will help you prioritize what you should and shouldn’t keep. If you truly l love all 12 pair of jeans and you really have the space to keep them, go for it.
4. When in Doubt, Try it On
If you’re unsure about something and don’t remember how it fits, or if it complements something else you have, try it on. If you don’t love how you look in it, donate it. It’s that simple! And hey, trying stuff on at home is a lot more comfortable than in a store, isn’t it?
Ask yourself the tougher questions. Are you keeping things because you feel guilty about who gave it to you? Are you hoping you’ll look good in it one day? If so, why waste your mental energy on clothing that doesn’t make you feel good NOW? Decluttering is bound to make you feel better about your wardrobe and how it fits your body. Give it a try!
